James Purnell's "Golden Goodbye"

It has been revealed that Stalybridge & Hyde MP and former Secretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions, James Purnell was given a "golden goodbye" for when he resigned as a cabinet minister back in June.

If an MP is to leave their ministerial post under any circumstances they are entitled to a severance payment equivalent to one quarter of their final salary. James Purnell's salary for being in charge of the DWP was £144,520 plus a generous pension, this would mean that Purnell would of been paid a staggering £36,130 for resigning from his government post.

Commenting on the news, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Steve Webb said:

“People will be shocked to learn that former ministers get these pay-offs even when they have been sacked or left of their own free will.

“Ministers should not be rewarded for failure.

“While thousands are losing their jobs, failed ministers get a huge payout on top of their salary as MPs. This can’t go on.”

And if James Purnell loses his seat come the next general election, he will get a "resettlement grant" between £32,383 and £64,766 depending on the length of service as an MP or 50 to 100 per cent of his final salary. The first £30,000 of any ‘resettlement’ payment is tax-free.

According to the TaxPayer's Alliance, the "resettlement grant" is an alternative to redundancy and has been established to help MPs to adjust to "non parliamentary life". Diddums! This will come as a culture shock to Purnell who is nothing more than a career MP.

Yet another disgraceful example of the Westminster gravy train, when lots of people are losing their jobs and homes! Piggy Purnell, cheat and fraudster extraordinaire, is obsessed with greed, which is even more unacceptable, given his own views on Benefit cheats.

Yet another example of how far removed from reality the world of Westminster really is.

If an ordinary working man resigned from a job in in industry, he'd receive no payout whatsoever, nor would he if he was sacked for breaking his contract or the employing company's rules.

The only time payouts are made in the REAL world is if someone is made redundant, ie the job they were doing ceases to exist. This certainly wasn't the case with Purnell. The job remains in existence, except Purnell chose not to want to do it any more.

Purnell wasn't made redundant, he walked away of his own free will, therefore he surely can't be eligible for any form of compensation. Yet another example of one rule for the ruling elite and another for the working man.

Utterly immoral and utterly disgusting.......How typically New Labour, how typically Tameside Labour........

Just goes to further highlight the venal triviality of the 'man'. "Career MP" has him right. Didn't he look into acting before taking up politics a la Blair?

Hard to believe he was tipped for greatness: he never came across as anything more than a mumbling chancer milking an upscale version of the local authority.

Nothing changes, jobs for the in crowd, just go's to show that corruption is alive and well and the stock in trade of some career politicians.

Politics should be a calling and the rip off culture needs to be stamped out.
I'm all for reasonable remuneration for a job well done but the expenses system should be outlawed and MP's and councillors should receive a flat rate allowance or salary.

Mind you with an unelected prime minister and a pirate as speaker it’s hardly a surprise that nothings changed.
